Picture this: you’re sat at your desk, kettle on, and your computer is quietly doing its thing. Windows 10 is ticking along just like it always has. Everything seems fine.
Here is the thing though. In October 2025, Microsoft pulled the plug on Windows 10 support. No fanfare, no countdown clock. Just silence. No more security updates, no more patches, no more fixes.
If your business is still running Windows 10, that is worth paying attention to. Here is what it actually means for you.
So What Does “End of Life” Actually Mean?
Nobody is coming to uninstall Windows 10 from your machine. Your computer will still turn on. Your files will still be there. Windows 10 will still work perfectly well for most things.
But here is the problem. Every month, Microsoft used to release security patches for Windows 10. These patches fixed newly discovered vulnerabilities before hackers could exploit them. From October 2025 onwards, those patches stopped. Any new security flaw found in Windows 10 will stay open, permanently, with no fix coming.
Think of it like a landlord who stops maintaining a building. The lights still work today, but the next time something breaks, nobody is coming to fix it.
We Have Seen This One Before (and It Did Not End Well)
Windows XP went end of life back in April 2014. Three years later, the WannaCry ransomware attack hit, and it absolutely hammered businesses that were still running XP.
The NHS alone took an estimated £92 million worth of damage. Why? Because WannaCry exploited a vulnerability that Microsoft had already patched in supported versions of Windows. XP users had no patch and no protection.
Windows 10 is now in exactly the same position. Every day you keep running it is another day you are relying on luck rather than security.
What Actually Happens If You Do Nothing?
Honestly? Maybe nothing, for a while. But the risks stack up quickly.
- No security patches. Any new vulnerability in Windows 10 stays open. Cybercriminals know this and specifically target unsupported operating systems.
- Compliance headaches. Running unsupported software could put you in breach of GDPR and cyber insurance obligations. Not a conversation you want to have after an incident.
- Software dropping out. Third-party apps are already phasing out Windows 10 support. Some of the software you rely on will gradually stop working properly.
- Microsoft 365 going wobbly. Microsoft has confirmed Outlook, Teams, Word, and Excel will not be fully supported on Windows 10 after October 2025. Expect the odd gremlin.
- Insurance problems. Some cyber insurers now ask directly whether you run supported operating systems. If the answer is no, your policy could be at risk.
Right, So What Are Your Options?
The good news is there are three realistic paths forward. Which one suits you depends on your hardware, budget, and how quickly you want to get it sorted.
Upgrade to Windows 11
If your existing machines are less than three or four years old, there is a fair chance they can handle Windows 11. Microsoft has a free compatibility checker you can run, and the upgrade itself is free for eligible devices. Worth checking before anything else.
Replace the Hardware
If your machines are getting on a bit, this might be the nudge you needed anyway. New kit running Windows 11 out of the box, faster performance, and a clean setup done properly. Yes, there is an upfront cost, but weigh that against the cost of a ransomware attack or a data breach.
Extended Security Updates (Temporary Fix)
Microsoft is offering paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 until October 2028. It is not a permanent solution, but it buys you time to plan a proper migration without leaving your systems completely exposed in the meantime.
How to Check What You Are Running Right Now
Not sure which version of Windows your machines are on? Easy fix. Click the Start button, type winver and press Enter. A small window pops up telling you exactly what you are running. If it says Windows 10, you know what comes next.
Do Not Wait Until Something Goes Wrong
The businesses that get caught out by security incidents like this are rarely the ones that had no idea. They are the ones that meant to sort it, just never quite got around to it. The calendar has a habit of moving faster than our to-do lists.
October 2025 has already been and gone. If your machines are still on Windows 10, now is genuinely the right time to act.
